The lecture “Aperiodic Tiling: Between Chaos and Regularity,” presented by Pierre Hyvernat, a faculty member and researcher atat the Mathematics Laboratory (LAMA) – Faculty of Science and Mountain Studies (SceM) will take place on Thursday, January 14, 2027, at 6:30 p.m. at La Turbine Cinéma, Rue de l’Arlequin, Cran Gevrier, 74960 Annecy.
About the conference
Did you know? There are only a finite number of possible symmetries when arranging “tiles” in a regular pattern. The mosaics at the Alhambra Palace in Spain are a good example of this, since they contain every possible type of regular pattern. Motivated in part by the aesthetic aspect of the problem, mathematicians have long sought tile shapes that are irregular by nature. These shapes, known as “aperiodic,” can thus be arranged into immense patterns, but never in a regular way. Since the discovery of Penrose tiles in 1972, it has become possible to create mosaics at the boundary between the regular and the irregular. It wasn’t until 2023 that a single tile with this property was discovered.
