Amphis pour Tous – History of a new astronomy: gravitational waves

May 15, 2018, 6:00 p.m. - May 15, 2018, 7:30 p.m.

The lecture “The Story of a New Astronomy: Gravitational Waves, ” presented by Didier Verkindt, CNRS Research Fellow atthe Annecy Laboratory of Particle Physics (LAPP),Faculty of Science and Mountain Studies, will take place on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. at the USMB Administration Building in Chambéry.

It will also take place on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. in Annecy (La Turbine Sciences, Place Chorus, Cran-Gevrier 74960 Annecy).

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Following the first direct detection of a gravitational wave by the LIGO-VIRGO collaboration on September 14, 2015, a new field of astronomy was born. This new field observes the minute distortions of spacetime, rather than just the light from stars. It will undoubtedly bring new insights into our vast universe. This lecture tells the story of gravitational waves, from their conceptualization in the early 20th century to the ongoing efforts over the past 50 years to build increasingly powerful detectors. A marriage of fundamental science, high technology, and poetry.
