ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Following the first direct detection of a gravitational wave by the LIGO-VIRGO collaboration on September 14, 2015, a new field of astronomy was born. This new field observes the minute distortions of spacetime, rather than just the light from stars. It will undoubtedly bring new insights into our vast universe. This lecture tells the story of gravitational waves, from their conceptualization in the early 20th century to the ongoing efforts over the past 50 years to build increasingly powerful detectors. A marriage of fundamental science, high technology, and poetry.
