June 4, 2019, 6:00 p.m. - June 4, 2019, 7:00 p.m.

The lecture “I Feel I Am Becoming a God”: The Deification of Roman Emperors in the High Empire, presented by Fabrice Delrieux, professor at the Languages, Literatures, Societies, Transborder and International Studies Laboratory ( LLSETI), Faculty of Letters, Languages, and Humanities, will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc Administration Building in Chambéry.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Between the 1st and 3rd centuries A.D., the image that the Roman emperors sought to project of themselves changed significantly. Initially presenting themselves as the chief magistrates of a Republic officially restored after the turbulent times of civil war, they quickly blurred this image. First through subtle touches, then in an increasingly obvious manner, they revealed to the world an exceptional nature that set them apart from ordinary mortals, to the point of making them resemble gods, intending to be treated as such. The statues bear particularly clear witness to this evolution. Through the study of emblematic works, listeners discover how stone, when skillfully carved, can become a formidable weapon of propaganda.
