ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Every citizen of the European Union holds, in addition to their national citizenship, European citizenship: this has been a legal reality since the Treaty of Maastricht.
Beyond its legal definition, European citizenship has a history that goes beyond the desire to reconcile the peoples of Europe. It also stems from a consideration of the specific rights that should be guaranteed to citizens and lends political significance to the European project.
From World War II to the current war in Ukraine, through the major European conferences of the 1970s and the fall of the “Iron Curtain,” what is the history of European citizenship? Is it merely the result of the crises that have shaken the continent? Has it been invoked in European debates? Ultimately, what is its purpose?
