ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The issue of religious symbols arises regularly in public spaces, particularly in schools.
It has become commonplace for controversies to arise at the start of each school year (think of certain school uniforms), each summer (the burkini), and also each winter (Christmas nativity scenes).
The questions raised concern not only the place of religious symbols, but also their meaning. How, indeed, can we determine what is or is not a religious symbol? How should it be interpreted? And finally, what are the consequences, both for public services and for users?
