ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

In June 2011, UNESCO inscribed the prehistoric lake dwellings of the Alps on the World Heritage List. This site comprises 111 lake dwellings spread across the countries of the Alpine arc, nine of which are located on the lakes of Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Paradoxically, how many of us are familiar with the prehistoric lake dwellings of Lake Bourget, Lake Aiguebelette, or Lake Annecy?
Following an introductory section presenting the prehistoric lake villages, this lecture will assess their role in the tourist and heritage landscapes of the Savoyard lakes (Lakes Aiguebelette and Bourget), with secondary focus on the lakes of Haute-Savoie (Annecy, Lake Geneva) and the Jura region (Clairvaux, Chalain). Factors aimed at explaining
the social invisibility of prehistoric lake villages will then be presented, leading to a conclusion with proposals for promotional initiatives capable of making this invisible heritage visible and turning it into resources for the Savoie region.
