Amphis Pour Tous – Nonlinear optics: light becomes magical

December 12, 2023, 6:30 p.m. - December 12, 2023, 8:00 p.m.

The lecture “Nonlinear Optics: Light Becomes Magic ,” presented by Jean-Louis COUTAZ, distinguished professor and researcher at the Center for Radio Frequencies, Optics, and Micro-Nanoelectronics of the Alps (CROMA), Faculty of Sciences and Mountain Studies, will take place on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. at Archparc, Mont-Blanc 1 building, 61 rue Antoine Rédier, 74610 Archamps.

It will also be held:

  • Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. in Annecy
  • Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in Chambéry

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The field of nonlinear optics encompasses all phenomena that occur when matter is illuminated by a very powerful light beam. For example, light changes color as it passes through a perfectly transparent crystal.

Without getting bogged down in mathematical formalism, many amazing applications will be presented: the shortest controlled events (attosecond pulses) that humans are capable of producing, ultra-high-speed fiber-optic telecommunications, medical imaging, extreme microscopy, thermonuclear fusion, the creation of matter from light… but also, more prosaically, certain laser pointers that everyone can use on a daily basis.
