It will also take place on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. in Albertville (Le Dôme Cinéma, 135 Place de l’Europe).

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The works of M.C. Escher and the frescoes of the Alhambra possess, in addition to their artistic qualities, an exceptional mathematical depth: they adhere, sometimes in a hidden way, to fundamental principles of symmetry in mathematics. These symmetries can be found in everyday life: bathroom tiles and honeycomb patterns obey the same principles and are linked to fields as diverse as geometry, group theory, number theory, theoretical computer science, and Fourier analysis. The aim of this lecture is to reveal this hidden elegance, which can be found in both nature and human constructions. Despite the increasing sophistication of the objects considered—rosettes, friezes, regular tilings, and aperiodic tilings—no mathematical knowledge is required to understand and appreciate most of their properties.
