Science Café: “The Universality of Interactions: Are the Laws of Nature Inevitable?”

March 30, 2026, 7:30 p.m. - March 30, 2026, 8:30 p.m.

On March 30, 2026, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., La Turbine Sciences is hosting an event as part of the Brasserie des Sciences lecture series at the Bistro des Tilleuls (13 Chemin de la Prairie, Annecy) on the topic “The Universality of Interactions: Are the Laws of Nature Inevitable? ." This lecture will be led by Piotr Tourkine, a theoretical physicist at the Annecy-le-Vieux Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (LAPTh).

ABOUT THE MEETING

At first glance, the laws of nature seem complex and highly diverse. One of the greatest advances in modern theoretical physics has been the realization that these laws all stem from elementary and simple laws that describe phenomena ranging from the shortest distances imaginable—the quantum world of elementary particles—to cosmology and the entire universe. A deep dive into this remarkable simplification of the laws of physics! Fundamental interactions—gravity, the electromagnetic interaction, and the strong and weak nuclear forces—all stem from similar, universal principles, with quantum field theory serving as the cornerstone. Finally, we will explore some aspects of what quantum field theory can teach us about gravity, both at the quantum level and at the level of gravitational waves emitted by black hole mergers—which we have recently learned to detect in experiments such as VIRGO.

ABOUT THE SCIENCE BREWERY

The Brasserie des Sciences meetings allow the general public to discuss current scientific topics with researchers and experts in a friendly atmosphere. They are organized by La Turbine Sciences and its partners, and take place one Monday per month from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Bistro des Tilleuls in Annecy.
