On Thursday March 13 at 8pm at the MJC in Chambéry, the scientific culture association Science Action is organizing a meeting on the theme of "Police scientifique: quand la science enquête" ("Scientific police: when science investigates").

ABOUT THE MEETING

Science has become an essential ally of law enforcement agencies in solving criminal cases. Thanks to technological advances, the forensic police analyze the clues left at a crime scene and identify them with precision, in order to confound the guilty or clear the suspects. From chemistry to physics to biology, scientific and technical experts call on a wide range of fields to carry out their analyses. Fingerprinting, genetic fingerprinting, ballistics, document analysis, telephone tracing, credit card and Internet activity tracing, etc. are just some of the many clues used in investigations. In a world where crime is constantly evolving, science is a formidable asset in the service of justice. What is the link between the judicial world and research? What training courses lead to these professions? What are the latest investigative innovations? Do our TV series tell the truth, or are our perceptions biased by them?

To answer all these questions, the association Science actions will be hosting a number of specialist speakers at this café-débate.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

  • David Tognelli, divisional commander, former head of the Besançon criminal investigation department. He will be accompanied by a forensic technician from Annecy.
  • Jacques HEBRARD, Lieutenant General (2S). Engineer from the Ecole de l'Air and holder of a postgraduate diploma in chemical forensics from the University of Lausanne.
  • Pierre HENRY, forensic pathologist at CH Métropole Savoie.

ABOUT CAFÉS SCIENCE

The Cafés Science are an opportunity for the general public to debate, in a convivial atmosphere, with experts and researchers on a wide range of subjects, many of them highly topical. They are organized by the Science-Actions association, in collaboration withuniversité Savoie Mont Blanc, the city of Chambéry, the Astrée cinema and Chambéry's MJC.

These evenings are organized on the principle of debate, based on questions put by the audience to the speakers. They are neither lectures nor conferences. They enable everyone to form their own opinion on often complex subjects, for which there is no single or simple solution. They also provide an opportunity to find out more about the research being carried out locally in the Chambéry region and neighbouring areas, by the researchers, engineers and doctors who take part in our evenings on a voluntary basis.

Once a quarter, Cafés Science take the form of a film session called Ciné Science. In this case, the film is shown at the Astrée cinema, at 8:30pm. It is followed by a debate with 2-3 specialists on the theme of the film.
