ABOUT THE SESSION

Obesity is a cause for concern. The proportion of obese adults in France has doubled since 1997 and has stabilized in recent years. Currently, 17% of French people are obese.

This "epidemic" has significant consequences for the health of those affected; complications are numerous: type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis of the hips and knees, fatty liver disease, certain cancers…

It also affects their social integration: they are often perceived as unable to control their appetite or lacking willpower, which can have negative consequences in certain situations (such as hiring or taking on responsibilities); practical issues related to obesity are not taken into account in public spaces (chairs, armchairs, etc.) One could refer to this as “fatphobia.”

Obesity results from a combination of junk food and a sedentary lifestyle, along with a variety of other factors, including genetic and epigenetic, environmental, and socioeconomic factors…

How can we break this health impasse? Dietary changes, medication, behavioral therapy, exercise, and surgery. Come join the discussion on all these issues.
