On Thursday, January 16, 2020, the Science-Actions association invites you to join a discussion on land use planning. The Café Scientifique event, titled “Land Use Planning: Toward Responsible Urban Development,” will take place at the MJC (Espace Bartem) at 311 Faubourg Montmélian in Chambéry, starting at 8:00 p.m.
Land Use Planning: Toward Responsible Urban Planning
Land-use planning was initially conceived in terms of infrastructure, with the aim of developing the most dynamic areas around major cities and opening up regions that had been left behind in terms of economic and demographic growth. This led to the development of cities, highways, high-occupancy vehicle lanes, commercial zones, and areas of collective housing followed by those of single-family housing—all at the expense of agricultural land, wetlands, and biodiversity. Environmental protection has therefore logically become one of the stated objectives of land use planning. While the city of Chambéry is experiencing moderate population growth, its suburban belt is undergoing very rapid expansion. Due to urban sprawl, commutes between home and work have become longer and more frequent. Traffic has become denser, and quality of life has suffered as a result. Improving residents’ quality of life is therefore one of the objectives of land-use planning. Under these conditions, how will Savoie accommodate 60,000 new residents by 2040? By continuing to urbanize the Geneva–Grenoble corridor and relegating “natural” areas to non-skiable mountain zones? Or is a different approach to regional and urban planning possible?
In the presence of:
- Lionel Laslaz, associate professor of geography and regional planning at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc, Laboratory for Mountain Environments, Dynamics, and Territories (EDYTEM)
