On Thursday, December 14, 2017, the Science Actions association will explore the issue of water. The Café Scientifique event, titled “Water: A Local Resource, a Global Problem,” will take place at Le Beaujolais restaurant in Chambéry and will begin at 8:00 p.m.
WATER: A LOCAL RESOURCE, A GLOBAL PROBLEM
At first glance, there seems to be plenty of it: water covers 70% of the Earth’s surface. But freshwater accounts for only a small fraction of that, and easily accessible freshwater is an even smaller portion. On a global scale, this amounts to a drop in the bucket that 7 billion people use for drinking, irrigation, raising livestock, cleaning, making fruit juice, or filling their swimming pools.
The problem is global because climate change is redistributing water around the world. Here, droughts are intensifying, while there, rains are devastating.
But it is also local, because water has become a scarce resource shared by residents of Chambéry, farmers, swimmers, industrialists, and skiers who have become reliant on artificial snow…
Solutions must first be found at the local level, within watersheds. How do we want to use the water around Lake Bourget? Do we need to change our habits? Stop growing corn? Dig ever deeper to tap into new aquifers?
To answer all these questions—and especially the ones you’re asking yourself—we invite you to join us at Café du Beaujolais on Thursday, December 14, at 8 p.m. for a science café on the theme: Water: A Local Resource, a Global Problem.
Featuring:
- Robert Mondot, president ofUFC-Que choisir Chambéry and national board member responsible for water management and policy issues
- Claude Vallier, founder of Cognin Eau Vivante, an organization that supportsthe Atelier de l’eau
- Cyrille Girel, Water and Sanitation Manager at CISALB
- Claude Parry, a member of Hydraulique sans frontières
SCIENTIFIC CAFÉS
Science Cafés (or “Science and Citizenship Cafés, Debate”) provide the general public with an opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics—often current issues—with experts, researchers, and professionals in a friendly atmosphere. They are organized by the Science Actions association, in collaboration with:
- Savoie Mont Blanc University
- the city of Chambéry
- the Eureka Gallery
- the Beaujolais Restaurant and theAstrée cinema
