TheOrchestre des Pays de Savoie returns to the University of Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) for a new season of "Campus en Musique." The first concert will take place on October 19 on the Bourget-du-Lac campus, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., at the student center (EVE – building 6). The theme will be "Folklore! LIGETI, GRIEG, HAAS, BARTÓK" and will be conducted by Nicolas Chalvin.
ABOUT THE CONCERT
Edvard Grieg's piece, originally written for piano as a tribute to a regionalist writer, is more in line with a movement to rediscover the Baroque style. Béla Bartók was the great musical figure who gave ethnomusicology its letters of nobility by traveling with Kodály through Transylvania listening to folk melodies. These musical transcriptions, readily orchestrated by composers, are accompanied by some astonishing early recordings. TheRomanian Folk Dancesexist in numerous versions, with a wide variety of rhythms and colors following one another in quick succession. In 1949, at the beginning of his career, György Ligeti chose a very similar format for hisOld Hungarian Ballroom Dances(Régi magyar társas táncok). Pavel Haas, a Czech composer, was a student of Janáček. He composed music inspired by Bohemia, but only a few pieces were considered by him to be of sufficient quality to be given an opus number. The piece for strings thus retains the title of study and reflects his tragic final years in Terezín.
After the war, the concept of popular art came to refer more to cinema and pop music, and it is only fairly recently that the idea of pieces that appeal to the collective imagination of the public or encourage audience participation in concerts has resurfaced. It is in this spirit that a competition for a participatory work was launched by the Orchestre des Pays de Savoie and the Orchestre d'Auvergne.
The audience will be invited to sing along with the orchestra. [To practice]
