Interdisciplinary Symposium – Women Against the State: Activists, Terrorists, and Dissidents Through History

May 23, 2019, 8:30 a.m. - May 24, 2019, 12:30 p.m.

On Thursday, May 23, and Friday, May 24, 2019, the University of Savoie Mont Blanc and the Laboratory for Languages, Literatures, Societies, and Transborder and International Studies (LLSETI) will host the interdisciplinary conference “Women Confronting the State: Activists, Terrorists, and Dissidents Through the Ages.”

This conference offers an overview of women who oppose and have opposed the state from a perspective that brings together Anglophone, Hispanic, and German-speaking civilizations and histories. The forms and expressions of dissent will be analyzed, as well as the modes of action favored by women, such as political extremism. Finally, the methods of state repression—the primary form of which is imprisonment—will be examined through a gender lens. The conference will also highlight cross-border and transnational struggles.

The conference will be held in Room 20020 on the Jacob-Bellecombette campus. Admission is free.
