ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Located on either side of the Western Alps, the States of Savoy emerged following a long process of territorial consolidation, which led them to encompass highly diverse populations. Living in diverse linguistic and cultural areas (French, Italian, Franco-Provençal, Occitan, German), the subjects of the House of Savoy spoke a wide variety of languages, which was one of the reasons Latin remained the administrative language for so long. Although the Edict of Rivoli of 1561, which mandated the use of French and Italian in administrative documents, marked a major turning point, this evolution was not linear and did not eliminate the multilingualism characteristic of the States of Savoy. The linguistic richness of the former territories of the House of Savoy will be highlighted during this conference, taking into account the diversity of local developments and examining both administrative practices and court life, whose international influence was accompanied by significant multilingualism.

The 35 conference presentations, which will be delivered by scholars from France, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany in one of the conference’s two languages (French and Italian), will be streamed live at the following address: https://zoom.us/j/97471286774?pwd=OFJ4NkVkOGk0SllsYWwvYWVOdFVIZz09
