On September 18 and 19, 2025, the Languages, Literature, Society, Cross-Border and International Studies (LLSETI) and the Antoine Favre Law Research Center (CERDAF) at USMB are organizing an international conference at the University’s main building (27 rue Marcoz, 73000 Chambéry) to mark the centenary of Michel de Certeau’s birth. This conference will be preceded by a lecture on the Michel de Certeau exhibition at the Chambéry Museum of Fine Arts on Wednesday, September 17.
About the conference
Michel de Certeau was born in 1925 in Chambéry, Savoie. To mark the centenary of the birth of this major, defiantly unclassifiable, and internationally renowned author, the LLSETI and CERDAF research centers at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc are organizing a conference that brings together perspectives on heritage, the contemporary, and the future.
Spanning two days, this conference in Chambéry features presentations by scholars specializing in De Certeau, his multifaceted body of work, and/or its various contemporary extensions. It is organized around three main themes:
- the complexity of Michel de Certeau’s intellectual and biographical journey,
- the breadth of his work, which touches on a wide range of subjects that span established disciplines,
- the relevance of this author’s ideas, an inexhaustible source of inspiration for contemporary researchers across the humanities and social sciences and beyond.
This conference is intended both for researchers who are currently engaging with aspects of Michel de Certeau’s work and for a broader audience interested in understanding the relevance of this scholar’s ideas today.
