LLSETI International Multidisciplinary Symposium – "Corpus of Landscapes"

April 4, 2018, 9:15 a.m. - April 6, 2018, 4:00 p.m.

The Languages, Literature, Societies, Cross-Border and International Studies Laboratory (LLSETI) at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc is organizing an international multidisciplinary conference on the theme of "Landscape Corpus" from April 4 to 6, 2018, with the support of CAUE Savoie and Haute-Savoie and the Museums of the City of Chambéry.

The conference will take place over three days at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) in Chambéry. With the exception of the afternoon of April 5, it will be held at the Chambéry Museum of Fine Arts (Garriod Room).

About the conference

The multidisciplinary international symposium "Corpus of Landscapes" (organized by Pascal Bouvier and Dominique Pety, LLSETI) will analyze various forms of descriptions, representations, and reconstructions of landscapes, based on a corpus of literary, iconographic, and historiographic sources, botanical and numismatic collections, etc., as well as new digital devices through which we perceive landscapes today:

  • regularly renewed photographic recordings from the Landscape Photography Observatories;
  • databases that digitize heritage collections (libraries, museums) on the theme of landscape;
  • finally, new digital applications (serious games, 3D modeling, video games, mobile games, etc.).

The participatory dimension and impact on the general public of these devices will be examined, as will the changes in our contemporary conception of landscape: is it still a source of knowledge and representations that pass through classification systems, or is it increasingly escaping our various attempts at framing, through a variety of sensory experiences, whether direct or mediated?

This symposium, organized by the LLSETI Laboratory with the support of the Environments, Dynamics, and Mountain Territories Laboratory (EDYTEM) at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc, and in partnership with the Chambéry Museum of Fine Arts and the Charmettes Museum, is supported by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the Savoie (CAUE 73) and Haute-Savoie (CAUE 74) Councils for Architecture, Urban Planning, and the Environment, and the Paysage>Paysages en Isère program. In connection with the digital devices and artistic projects discussed during the conference, an exhibition of landscape paintings (from digital media) by Marc Vuillermoz (lecturer at USMB and researcher at LLSETI) will be held in the university's presidential hall for the duration of the conference.
