LLSETI Symposium – "Original Sin: Anthropology and Political History (18th-20th Centuries)"

May 23, 2019, 2:00 p.m. - May 24, 2019, 5:00 p.m.

The Languages, Literatures, Societies, Transborder and International Studies Laboratory (LLSETI) is organizing a conference on Thursday, May 23, and Friday, May 24, 2019, on the theme “Original Sin. Anthropology and Political History (18th–20th Centuries).” It will take place in Building 5 Upper, Rooms 510/511, on the Jacob-Bellecombette campus.

About the conference

Is original sin a subject of study for historians? One might doubt it, judging by the bibliography, which is dominated primarily by works by theologians and philosophers. Yet it is a key dogma of Christianity that is of interest to the historian: besides the fact that a significant portion of sacramental practice is rooted in it, it brings into play a conception of humanity from which derive conceptions of society and social order, of evil, of suffering, and of freedom. The coincidence between the slow erosion of its socially recognized meaning and the advent of the society of opinions cannot be reduced to the caricatured process of the erasure of a “legend.” Is original sin the subject of religious anthropology and political history? The investigation must be conducted.
