The Orchestre des Pays de Savoie returns to the Université Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) for a new season. The second concert will take place on Thursday, January 24, 2019, on the Annecy campus, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the lobby of the Annecy IUT. The theme will be “A Touch of Surprise,” and the concert will be conducted by Nicolas Chalvin.
ABOUT THE CONCERT
The three works on the program remind us just how misleading titles can be in classical music. Humor, moreover, is a subtle art that, in certain situations—depending on the context it implies—allows one to first take a step back. Mozart’s musical jest is thus more of a satirical work that is far from being a youthful piece and today requires a thorough understanding of the flaws in classical conventions that the composer criticized in some of his peers. Haydn’s title, added after the fact like so many others, refers less to an educational dimension—as one might assume today—than to the severity or rigidity that a punishment from the master might suggest. Conversely, the subtitle of Beethoven’s 11th quartet, “Quartetto serioso,” gives no hint of the piece’s epic inspiration, which was steeped in the project the composer was working on at the time regarding Egmont, Goethe’s hero.
On the agenda:
- Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet No. 11, "Serioso" (version for chamber orchestra)
- Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 55, "Schullmeister"
- Wolfgang A. Mozart: A Musical Joke
(Tentative schedule and order; subject to change)
