The Languages, Literature, Societies, Cross-Border and International Studies (LLSETI) at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc is organizing a conference on Thursday, March 5, 2020, on the theme "From 'defeated mountain' to 'collective glacier': rethinking the perception of the high mountains of the Alps," led by visual artist and photographer Olivier de Sépibus.
The conference will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Garriod Room of the Chambéry Museum of Fine Arts (Place du Palais de Justice, Chambéry).
About Olivier de Sépibus
My work on mountains is set against a backdrop of melting Alpine glaciers and thawing permafrost, which is weakening rock faces and causing rockfalls and avalanches. The landscape is changing rapidly at high altitudes, raising concerns about the stability of the terrain and calling into question the sporting and contemplative activities that are now so popular. My aim is to "de-situate" and "deterritorialize" the mountains, to remove them from fetishistic relationships and conquests in order to explore other unmarked paths in the surrounding chaos. My work on the high Alpine mountains is multifaceted. Initially photographic, with montagne défaite, a new direction was taken with the drawn maps of hyper-mountains. Photographs and drawings are ways of exploring this territory of the high Alpine mountains in a new light. I am now opening up new fields of creation by experimenting with group work, performance, and collaboration with glaciologists," Olivier de Sépibus.
