CARRTEL Conference: "From the Little Ice Age to the Age of Glacial Lakes"

May 25, 2023, 10:30 a.m.

On Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., a conference entitled "From the Little Ice Age to the Age of Glacial Lakes" will be held, organized by the CARRTEL laboratory (Alpine Center for Research on Trophic Networks in Limnic Ecosystems). This conference will be attended by Jean-Baptiste Bosson and Florent Arthaud and will be broadcast live on CARRTEL's YouTube channel.

About the conference

This presentation will explore widespread glacial retreat on Earth and the associated emergence of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Particular focus will be placed on freshwater ecosystems (primarily lakes and, to a lesser extent, wetlands and rivers) that form as a result of glacial retreat. This presentation will be based in particular on the work carried out in recent years as part of the Ice&Life project and the monitoring carried out by the Sentinel Lakes Network. This conference will also be an opportunity to present the Ice&Life project, which aims to use scientific data to increase the protection of glaciers and post-glacial ecosystems on Earth.

About the speakers

  • Florent Arthaud is a lecturer at USMB and a researcher at CARRTEL. He works in aquatic ecology and plant communities. He chairs the GIS Lacs Sentinelles and is one of the founders of the Ice&Life project.
  • Jean-Baptiste Bosson is a glaciologist and geomorphologist. He works in the scientific department ofASTERS-CEN74 and has been appointed to the National Council for Nature Conservation. Since 2020, he has been developing and coordinating the Ice&Life project.
