Organized by the USMB's Languages, Literature, Societies, Cross-Border and International Studies Laboratory (LLSETI) and the Association of Philosophy Teachers in Public Education, the 2022-2023 series of philosophy lectures begins on Wednesday, November 16, at 6 p.m. with a debate on the theme of "Morality and Politics." It will take place at the USMB presidency in Chambéry.
The political world often shows us nothing but corruption, disloyalty, lies, betrayed ideals, or petty deals to the detriment of a people who, as far as we can tell, do not embody virtue either. It may be that power corrupts, or that, as Machiavelli showed us, politics is inevitably a place of cunning and a closed field of power relations in which morality has no place. But we know that Machiavelli was less skeptical of morality than he was radically critical of its supposed upholders, particularly the Church, which he saw as corrupt and partisan of domination. In any case, we invest the political arena with ethical demands, and we know that our ethical demands are powerless without political support. We propose to discuss these issues in a deliberately limited roundtable discussion among a few people, after which we will open the floor to see if, in a matter that is not a matter of science but of opinion and confronts us with dissent, any issues emerge.
The speakers participating in the debate are:
- Pascal Bouvier, professor of philosophy at USMB;
- Jean Pierre Ruffier,Honorary Inspector of National Education
- Édouard Schoene, engineer;
- Martine Verlhac, honorary professor of philosophy.
The conference is open to everyone and no registration is required. It will be held in Room 3 (27 rue Marcoz, Chambéry).
