Are you ready to give up driving your vehicle? Nearly half of French people are!

Ever since the spotlight turned to Google Car—a vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals, designed entirely by the famous American company—autonomous cars have been fueling both fantasies and fears. Now is the time for large-scale experiments with shuttles and other autonomous vehicles, for example in Lyon and Lausanne. However, these so-called driverless cars are far from science fiction. Manufacturers have been working on them for a long time. The proof? The latest models now feature numerous driving aids—video cameras, presence detectors, cruise control, automatic parking guidance—which are slowly but surely getting us used to increasingly automated driving.

What are the expected impacts of autonomous cars on road safety, the environment, and the quality of life of people who are unable to drive, either temporarily or permanently? What new forms of mobility will ultimately emerge? Will it still be worth buying your own car in the future? Will garages and parking lots become obsolete? And what is the downside of these driverless cars, which make us feel like we are losing all control?

Sylvie Landriève, co-director of Forum Vies Mobiles, will be speaking to shed light on the subject. Created by SNCF, Forum Vies Mobiles is an independent institute for research and forward thinking on mobility today and tomorrow. It has already organized several public debates on autonomous cars and their acceptance by the public. The event is organized as part of European Mobility Week.
