Lecture – “World Records in Running from the 100 m to the 5,000 m: An Energy Analysis”

February 12, 2019, 5:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, February 12, 2019, the Inter-University Laboratory of Motor Biology (LIBM) is hosting a lecture titled “World Records in Running from the 100 m to the 5,000 m: An Energy Analysis” as part of a visit to the University of Savoie Mont Blanc by Professor Di Prampero, a world-renowned expert in exercise physiology.

It will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the lecture hall of Building 4E (formerly the Vanoise Lecture Hall) on the Bourget-du-Lac campus.

About the conference

The temporal variation in metabolic power during top-level 100- to 400-meter running performances by world-class athletes was estimated by assuming that sprinting on flat ground is biomechanically equivalent to running uphill at a constant speed. Since the energy cost of running uphill is known, it is then possible to determine the energy cost and metabolic power during sprints based solely on the change in speed over time. The same type of approach has made it possible to accurately estimate the maximum metabolic power and total energy expenditure during world records ranging from the 100 m to the 5,000 m, as well as the maximum aerobic power and the maximum amount of energy derived from the anaerobic system of these record holders. And all this without needing to bring these champions into the lab! These innovative methods enhance our understanding of the limits of human locomotion, but are also used in performance optimization systems.
