[Off-Campus] Theater Insights – Harlequin and Polichinelle at War, or the Rival Actors

March 14, 2019, 5:30 p.m. - March 14, 2019, 9:00 p.m.

On Thursday, March 14, 2019, at 7:00 p.m., as part of the “Perspectives Théâtrales” series at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc, come discover or rediscover the play “Arlequin and Polichinelle at War, or the Rival Actors” at the Auditorium of the Cité des Arts in Chambéry.

The performance will be preceded by an introductory lecture at 5:30 p.m. The lecture will be presented by Françoise Rubellin, professor at the University of Nantes and director of the Institute for Advanced Studies: “Polichinelle and Arlequin: Iconic Figures of the Fair Theater and the Italian Comedy in 18th-Century Paris.”

About the event

Who was the better actor in 18th-century Paris: Arlequin or Polichinelle? This show, inspired by several original texts—notably Carolet’s *Polichinelle, Censor of the Theaters* (1737)—immerses you in the heart of the commedia dell’arte and the theaters of the Foire. Satirical puppets and burlesque antics recreate the comedy so popular during the Age of Enlightenment with:

  • Enrico Bonavera, actor (Harlequin at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan)
  • Jean-Philippe Desrousseaux, puppeteer (Théâtre de l’Ambigu-Comique, Paris)
  • Etienne Galletier, guitar
  • François-Xavier Guinnepain, lighting and set design
  • Puppets carved by Petr Rezac
  • Miniature theater decorated by Philippe Chanel

The play “Arlequin and Polichinelle at War” was created for Perspectives Théâtrales; it will then go on tour. The USMB is therefore not merely a presenter; it is actively involved in its production.
