Organized by the USMB’s Languages, Literatures, Societies, Transborder and International Studies (LLSETI) laboratory and the Migrant’Scène festival, a study day on the theme of the migration “crisis” will take place on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at the USMB administration building in Chambéry. Open to all and requiring no registration, this event will feature lectures, discussions, and workshops.
This seminar will focus on an in-depth analysis of the multiple meanings of the concept of the “migration crisis.” Is it a crisis in terms of numbers, security, sovereignty, identity, or values, or is it a humanitarian crisis or a crisis of solidarity? These multiple meanings suggest that the concept of crisis is not entirely meaningless, even if it is complex and vague. This leads us to ask, following Edgar Morin, whether the moment of crisis—characterized by contradiction and rupture—will have a regressive or progressive outcome, and according to what criteria. The exploitation of the migration crisis by far-right parties—and even “centrist” politicians—suggests a regressive outcome characterized by authoritarianism.
The morning session will take place in the Decottignies Auditorium, and the afternoon session in Room 3, at the Savoie Mont Blanc University Administration Building (27 rue Marcoz, Chambéry).
