FEAST Virtual Lunch Seminar – "Risk and Mountaineering"

June 5, 2020, 1:30 p.m. - June 5, 2020, 2:30 p.m.

On Friday, June 5, 2020, the USMB's Alcotra FEAST project welcomes Alain Ghersen, author of numerous solo exploits in the Mont Blanc massif in the 1980s and 1990s, to talk about risk in the mountains. The FEAST virtual lunch seminar "Risk and Mountaineering" will take place at 1:30 p.m. online, on the TEAMS platform.

ABOUT THELUNCH SEMINAR

At a time when mountaineering is often portrayed in the media only in terms of tragedy or heroic feats, Alain Ghersen explains that "risk is omnipresent in mountaineering; whether we deny it or glorify it, it raises questions." In 2016, he published an essay entitled " Risk and Mountaineering – A Philosophical Reflection on Homo alpinus." From the dual perspective of mountaineer and philosopher, he analyzes the links between risk and mountaineering. He asks, "What does this figure of Homo alpinus tell us about modern man as a being who seeks to forge a unique path between and with the constraints that make up his environment?"

Registration is free but mandatory, as the number of participants is limited: [register]

On the day of the seminar, you will receive a link to connect and participate, with your camera and microphone turned off.
We recommend downloading the Microsoft TEAMS application or opening the link in Google Chrome. You will be able to ask questions in writing, which our moderators will read directly to the speaker.
