The Annecy Laboratory of Particle Physics (LAPP) is organizing a lecture titled“Exploring Quantum Gravity with Gamma-Ray Astronomy”as part of its “LAPP Wednesdays” series. The event will take place on February 14, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the LAPP facilities on the Annecy campus. Before the lecture, visitors will be able to tour the laboratory starting at 5:00 p.m. for an opportunity to interact with the scientists.
About the conference-debate
What if the speed of light weren't constant?
General relativity and quantum mechanics are two of the cornerstones of modern physics. Yet these two major theories, which describe the infinitely large and the infinitely small, refuse to agree with one another. In an attempt to reconcile them, various models have been proposed, known as quantum gravity theories. Some predict that photons—the particles of light—might have different speeds. We will see how this variation, which would be minuscule, can be probed using gamma-ray astronomy.
This lecture will be presented by Cyann Plard, a doctoral student at LAPP.
About LAPP Wednesdays
In 2023-2024, to mark the Year of Physics, LAPP is launching a new series of free events: LAPP Wednesdays. One Wednesday per month, LAPP staff invite you to discover a different aspect of research at a free event open to all. The program will include lectures, tours, discussions, and workshops.
