As part of the LAPP and LAPTh Wednesdays series, the Annecy Laboratory of Particle Physics (LAPP) and the Annecy Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (LAPTh) are organizing a lecture titled “When the Universe Shines in Gamma Rays: Discovering CTAO LSTs,” which will take place on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the LAPP facilities on the Annecy campus, and will be preceded by a tour of the EUTOPIA discovery space from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
This lecture will be presented by Armand Fiasson, a researcher at LAPP. Visitors will be able to tour the laboratory before the lecture, starting at 5:00 p.m., for an opportunity to speak with the scientists.
About the conference
Gamma-ray astronomy explores the most extreme phenomena in the Universe, such as gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei, and supernova remnants. CTAO will be the major observatory dedicated to this field, featuring networks of telescopes capable of detecting, from the ground, the Cherenkov light produced by the interaction of gamma rays with our atmosphere. The LSTs (Large-Sized Telescopes), giant 23-meter telescopes, are designed for the lowest energies covered by CTAO and for the study of rapid transient phenomena. LAPP is making a significant contribution to their construction, particularly to the camera support structure made of composite materials, as well as to the telescopes’ motion, control, and operation systems.
About LAPP and LAPTh Wednesdays
One Wednesday a month, scientists from LAPP and LAPTh invite you to explore a different aspect of research during a free event open to everyone. Lectures, tours, discussions, workshops… A variety of formats suitable for all audiences will be offered throughout the year.
