LAPP and LAPTh Wednesdays: An extraordinary telescope for exploring the universe at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory

July 9, 2025, 5:00 p.m. - July 9, 2025, 7:30 p.m.

As part of the LAPP and LAPTh Wednesdays series, the Annecy Laboratory of Particle Physics (LAPP) and the Annecy-le-Vieux Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (LAPTh) are organizing a lecture titled “An Extraordinary Telescope to Probe the Universe at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory,” which will take place on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the LAPP facilities on the Annecy campus.

This lecture will be presented by scientists from the LSST group at LAPP. Visitors will be able to tour the laboratory before the lecture, starting at 5:00 p.m., for an opportunity to speak with the scientists.

About visits

Before the conference, starting at 5 p.m., interested parties will have a special opportunity to visit the EUTOPIA Discovery Center and talk with scientists from LAPP and LAPTh.

About the conference

From Cerro Pachón in Chile, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory—equipped with the largest digital camera ever built—will repeatedly observe the southern night sky over the course of ten years, creating an ultra-wide, ultra-high-definition map of the universe.

This will enable us to detect anything that appears or changes from one night to the next in our nearby universe (asteroids, comets, variable stars), as well as in the more distant universe—such as the discovery of millions of stellar explosions (supernovae), for example.

More than 20 billion galaxies and 17 billion stars will also be measured and cataloged. Using the catalogs created in this way, it will be possible to gain a broad-scale view of the universe and attempt to understand the mechanisms governing its evolution.

About LAPP and LAPTh Wednesdays

In 2024-2025, following the success of previous events, LAPP is organizing free monthly events: LAPP and LAPTh Wednesdays.

One Wednesday per month, scientists at LAPP invite you to discover a different aspect of research during a free event that is open to all. Lectures, tours, discussions, workshops... A range of formats accessible to all audiences will be offered throughout the year.
