On Monday, April 8, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Center for Private and Public Law on Obligations and Consumption (CDPPOC) and the Faculty of Law of the University of Savoie Mont Blanc are organizing a seminar on "The Specificity of Compensation for Head and Brain Injuries: A Medico-Legal Approach" on the Jacob-Bellecombette campus, building 20, room 20020.
Day in honor of the "Marie-Christine Lagrange" class of the Master's in Private Law, specializing in personal injury law.
About the seminar
Under the supervision of: Ms. Laurence Clerc-Renaud – Assistant Professor of Private Law, University of Savoie Mont Blanc
Head trauma is a traumatic brain injury most often sustained in a traffic accident, sports accident, or assault. It includes shaken baby syndrome and brain injuries sustained during cerebral anoxia (particularly at birth) or strokes.
The severity varies—moderate, serious, severe—and is assessed using a specific method. The consequences are manifold: sensory disorders (vision, taste, smell, etc.), physical disorders (quadriplegia, hemiplegia, balance disorders, bladder and sphincter disorders, etc.). They can also affect cognitive functions – in this regard, we refer to "invisible damage" because diagnosis is so difficult (language, behavioral, memory disorders, etc.).
Compensation for damages resulting from head trauma or brain injury is a source of difficulty and requires, at the very least, special treatment: it is essential to adapt the expert assessment and medical evaluation, to surround oneself with competent professionals, and to involve the patient's family, professional, and social circles.
During this seminar, these difficulties will be addressed by recognized specialists in the field: doctors, occupational therapists, magistrates, lawyers, academics, victim representatives, etc.
