Seminar hosted by the Research Division, featuring a presentation by Arnaud Grandjacques

November 29, 2018, 1:00 PM - November 29, 2018, 7:00 p.m.

The first session of the seminar organized by the Research Cluster of the Langages, Littératures, Sociétés, Études Transfrontalières et Internationales (LLSETI) for the 2018–2019 academic year will take place on Thursday, November 29, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Pôle Enquête room (Building 10) on the Jacob-Bellecombette campus.

During this session, Arnaud Grandjacques, an associate member of the LLSETI laboratory, will speak on the topic “Metaphor in Sociology: Milestones in the Study of a Foreign Body.”

This presentation aims to reexamine the reputation of metaphor within the social sciences, and sociology in particular, given that these disciplines claim to be non-metaphorical. Consequently, any presence of metaphor(s) calls into question the scientific legitimacy of the statement, even though social theory, viewed as a whole, does not appear to be devoid of metaphor. Under these conditions, the aim will be to determine whether there is a possible place for metaphor within discourses on the social and whether it is conceivable that metaphor could play a role in the process of sociological inquiry.
