FEAST seminar: "When ski touring blurs the lines"

November 9, 2018, 9:00 a.m. - November 9, 2018, 5:30 p.m.

As part of the FEAST – Interreg Alcotra cross-border cooperation project, a multidisciplinary, forward-looking seminar on the concept of the “ski touring resort” will be held at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc on November 9, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in Room 20020 on the Jacob Bellecombette campus.

About the seminar

When Backcountry Skiing Blurs the Lines: Different Perspectives on the Impact of Backcountry Skiing’s Growth Both Within and Outside Resorts

Ski touring, as a sport and recreational activity, is undergoing significant changes. An increasing number of participants are seeking a safe and organized environment with trails marked according to difficulty levels. As a result, moving away from the idea of unrestricted activity in unspoiled natural settings, new practices are emerging within ski resorts, prompting these resorts to take action. At the same time, the growing number of participants is leading to concentrations in certain natural areas that could form “de facto” resorts, the environmental and tourism impacts of which have yet to be fully assessed.

The workshop aims to bring together contributions from researchers across all disciplines that can inform the discussion on how this mountain activity is evolving and explore its implications for the development of public and private policies regarding the adaptation of ski areas and other recreational sites (marketing, economics, sociology, law, geography, tourism, etc.). A dialogue with stakeholders on the ground will help broaden the perspective.

This event is organized in collaboration with LabeX ITEM —specifically the TSMI program— and the Center for Private and Public Law on Obligations and Consumer Affairs (CDPPOC).

Abstracts (approximately 10 lines) must be submitted to Claire Bataillard or Cristina Vignali by September 30, 2018.
