On Thursday, April 18, 2019, Mehrez AIANE, PhD student in energy and process engineering at the Laboratory for Optimization of Design and Environmental Engineering (LOCIE), will defend his thesis entitled "Characterization and modeling of an absorption air conditioning system."
The defense will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the lecture hall of the mountain center on the Bourget-du-Lac campus.
Thesis summary
In order to address growing concerns about the representativeness of customer usage in terms of emissions (including CO2, but also other gases), excessive air conditioning consumption will eventually be measured and displayed to the customer. Similarly, pollutant emissions will be measured more closely in line with usage, including the use of accessories. Given the current technical limitations, it is therefore important to offer a technical alternative to compression air conditioning. Absorption air conditioning is a particularly promising alternative solution, allowing the engine's thermal waste to be recovered with very low energy impact and no impact on the environment. Absorption air conditioning for cars has already been the subject of two theses, which have provided a detailed understanding of the absorption process in compact absorbers: Modeling of the absorption phenomenon (R. Goulet/CETHIL) and Optimization of a trickle absorption film (H. OBAME MVE/CETHIL). The aim of this new thesis is to study the system as a whole, integrating all of its components and examining the factors that limit its performance: fluid distribution, pressure losses, boiling development, droplet projections, and the presence of non-condensables. A global model of the machine incorporating the results of previous studies will be developed for this purpose. It will enable an assessment of user situations, particularly in transient mode, an evaluation of the volumes of liquid to be taken into account in the design, and a better identification of the causes and consequences of the performance variations observed on the test bench. The model will be validated through specific tests to be defined and carried out.
