Directed by Ai Weiwei
Starring Boris Cheshirkov, Peter Bouckaert
Genre: Documentary
Nationality: German
Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes

Synopsis:

More than 65 million people have been forced to leave their countries to escape famine, climate change, and war: this is the largest migration since World War II. Directed by internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei, HUMAN FLOW addresses the catastrophic scale of the migrant crisis and its terrible humanitarian repercussions.

Filmed over the course of a year in 23 countries, the documentary follows the journeys of men and women suffering around the world—from Afghanistan to Bangladesh, France to Greece, Germany to Iraq, Israel to Italy, Kenya to Mexico, and Turkey. HUMAN FLOW collects the testimonies of migrants who recount their desperate quest for justice and security. They tell us about overcrowded refugee camps, their high-risk journeys by sea, borders bristling with barbed wire, their feelings of distress and disillusionment, but also their courage, resilience, and desire to integrate. They talk about the lives they had to leave behind and the absolute uncertainty of a better future.

HUMAN FLOW arrives on our screens at a time when humanity needs tolerance, compassion, and trust in others more than ever. It bears witness to the spiritual strength of humankind and asks us one of the most essential questions of our time: will our globalized society manage to overcome fear, isolation, and withdrawal? Will it be able to turn towards openness to others, freedom, and respect for human rights?
