Genre: Biopic, Drama
Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
A brilliant and witty politician, Winston Churchill was one of the pillars of the British Parliament, but at the age of 65, he was an unlikely candidate for the office of Prime Minister. He was, however, appointed to the post on an emergency basis on May 10, 1940, following Neville Chamberlain’s resignation, amid a dramatic European situation marked by successive Allied defeats at the hands of Nazi troops and the British army’s inability to evacuate from Dunkirk. As the threat of a Hitler-led invasion of the United Kingdom looms and 200,000 British soldiers are trapped in Dunkirk, Churchill discovers that his own party is plotting against him and that even his king, George VI, is highly skeptical of his ability to handle the heavy burden of responsibility before him. Churchill must make a fateful decision: negotiate a peace treaty with Nazi Germany and spare the British people at this terrible cost, or mobilize the country and fight against all odds. With the support of Clementine, the woman he married 31 years earlier, he turns to the British people to find the strength to hold on and fight to defend his country’s ideals, its freedom, and its independence. With the power of words as his last resort, and with the help of his tireless secretary, Winston Churchill must compose and deliver the speeches that will rally his country. As he, like all of Europe, navigates his darkest hours, he is on a mission to change the course of history forever.
