ReGAIN: Knee Rehabilitation Tailored to Each Individual and Neuromuscular Deficits

The University of Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) and the Interuniversity Laboratory of Motor Biology (LIBM) are leading the REGAIN project, a Franco-Swiss cross-border initiative aimed at improving rehabilitation for patients following knee trauma—particularly after an anterior cruciate ligament tear—through the development of new assessment methods and innovative devices for measuring muscle strength, with the goal of better tailoring and optimizing their care.

The Project at a Glance

The REGAIN project aims to improve rehabilitation for patients with knee injuries, particularly following an anterior cruciate ligament tear. Through close collaboration between the University of Savoie Mont Blanc, La Tour Hospital and its sports physical therapy department, the Geneva School of Health Sciences, and the company MTraining, this project aims to introduce innovations in practice and procedures by proposing new patient care protocols. This will be made possible through technological innovations, specifically the development of innovative devices for measuring muscle strength that allow for a more precise assessment of neuromuscular alterations in a clinical setting. These innovations will enable more personalized and optimized clinical care to facilitate a return to sports or professional activities. Finally, the project aims to widely disseminate best practices among healthcare professionals through training sessions, workshops, and publications, thereby strengthening the skills of local stakeholders.

Expected Results

REGAIN will lead to a better understanding of the neuromuscular changes that occur following anterior cruciate ligament surgery. The project will also produce practical tools such as best-practice guidelines, reference values, assessment methodologies, and dedicated technological devices. Through innovations in practices, processes, and technology, this project will help reduce the risk of recurrence and the socioeconomic costs associated with knee injuries. The project will also facilitate networking among the various stakeholders in this field, enable the pooling of expertise, and propose innovative care models that will position the region as a center of excellence. Ultimately, these advances will help establish the region as a hub of expertise at the national and international levels.

Calendar

The REGAIN project will run from September1, 2026, to August 31, 2028.

Partners

This project is being implemented by a cross-border consortium comprising the following partners:

In addition to these key partners, the project will also draw on collaborations with several regional medical centers, including Médipôle Savoie, the Centre Hospitalier Métropole Savoie, and the Centre Hospitalier Albertville-Moûtiers, as well as with leading national institutions such as the European Sports Rehabilitation Center in Capbreton.
