The University of Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB), through the Laboratory of Computer Science, Systems, Information Processing, and Knowledge (LISTIC) andthe Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTerre), is embarking on a unique cross-border partnership to promote climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and resilience, taking into account ecosystem-based approaches.
The Project at a Glance
The idea of RESIL-AV (Resilience-Avalanches) was born in 2023 from a discussion between French and Italian researchers who realized they were studying the same phenomena and, independently of one another, developing new tools to support avalanche risk monitoring. Observations conducted over several years show that, due to climate change, the snowpack is evolving more rapidly and in a more heterogeneous manner: alternating periods of warming and marked cooling, episodes of rain at high elevations, and intense precipitation. While these changes tend to reduce snow cover below 2,000 meters, they make it more difficult to predict the risk in areas where the majority of avalanches likely to impact roads occur.
In this context, the project partners have reached the same conclusion: observation systems, protocols, and decision-support tools are evolving in each region, but without cross-border coordination—even though the issues are similar. The need for a shared framework, harmonized data, and a joint approach to new tools therefore appears to be an essential step.
