Researchers' Night in Bourg Saint Maurice

On Friday, September 25, come meet the researchers at USMB!

On Friday, September 25, researchers from the University of Savoie Mont Blanc will gather at the Friche Artistique et Solidaire to share their work in an engaging and welcoming atmosphere. This is a unique opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with scientists from all disciplines.

On the agenda

From 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Workshops reserved for high school students in Bourg-Saint-Maurice

By researchers at the Laboratory for Building Energy Processes (LOCIE)

“How Energy, Air, and Materials Shape Our Environment”  : LOCIE offers interactive exhibits on the topics of energy, air quality, and experimental analysis of material deformation and stress. Through interactive experiments, accessible demonstrations, and posters, high school students will discover how energy flows, the environments in which we live, and the building materials around us represent significant environmental challenges and influence our sensory experiences.

Bythe UNITA Alliance of European Universities
“Test Your Knowledge of Europe!”: A
fun workshop offered by UNITA to allow high school students to test their knowledge of Europe and learn about the European Union in an interactive and engaging way.

6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – Lecture: “Night and Witchcraft in Savoie” – Free and open to all, no registration required
By Jean-Yves Champeley, professor and researcher at the Laboratory for Language, Literature, Societies, Cross-Border and International Studies (LLSETI)

Emblematic figures of the night, who are witches really? Is our perception of them different from reality? Let's demystify (or not!) these evil characters with their many magic potions and discover the true story behind the witch hunts in Savoie...

Jean-Yves Champeley is an associate professor of modern history at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc and a researcher at the LLSETI Laboratory.

A specialist in rural and urban societies in modern France, his work focuses in particular on community rituals, local justice, and witchcraft practices. He has also co-organized several conferences, notably on witch trials in the Savoy region and on mythical creatures in the Alps.

7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. – Lecture: “Dreams and Reality: What Really Happens When We Sleep?” – Free and open to everyone, no registration required
By Pascal Hot, lecturer and researcher at the Laboratory of Psychology and Neurocognition (LPNC)

Every night, when our eyes close, our brains remain active. Sleep takes up nearly a third of our lives. But what do we know about sleep? Why is it essential? What are dreams? Between fatigue, sleep, dreams, and waking, let’s take a look behind the scenes of the night.

Pascal Hot, a professor of neuropsychology at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc, closely studies emotions and their functions, as well as sleep and its relationship to memory disorders. A member of the Institut Universitaire de France, he teaches affective sciences and neuroscience and shares his knowledge through various initiatives to promote scientific literacy.

In particular, he published an article about his research in *The Conversation* in 2023 and participated in a science café on daylight saving time and its impact on our biological clock.
