ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The issue of religious symbols is regularly raised in public spaces, particularly in schools.

It's become commonplace for controversy to erupt at the start of every new school year (we're thinking of certain student outfits), every summer (the burkini) and every winter (Christmas cribs).

Questions are being asked not only about the place of religious symbols, but also about their meaning. How can we determine what a religious sign is or isn't? How should they be interpreted? And finally, what are the consequences, both for public services and for users?
