ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Forests are often referred to as the lungs of the planet. While this metaphor is educational, it is scientifically incorrect because, unlike lungs, forests absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. What about lakes? Measurements show that, like animals, most lakes absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. You could say that lakes sometimes yawn or burp, since they can also emit methane! This exhalation by lakes is strongly influenced by their terrestrial environment, which determines their diet, as well as by human management.
