ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Housing is at the heart of the issue of sustainable development. Together with transportation, it accounts for more than two-thirds of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming. It is often the largest item of household expenditure. Rising housing prices are a factor in social exclusion and a source of imbalance in our societies, particularly in areas with high land pressure such as Savoie or Haute-Savoie, and especially in the Greater Geneva area.
Today, there is another way of living: cooperative housing. This involves building better and cheaper housing that is adapted to the changing needs of a sustainable lifestyle. Between the traditional rental and owner-occupied models, housing cooperatives could offer the "best of both worlds" and allow for innovation without speculation. They represent a third way of accessing housing, with advantages and characteristics observed in Switzerland, where they are highly developed, and in France, where they are beginning to emerge.
