ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The landscape paintings in our museums, the engravings in old books, and even photographs of today’s landscapes can all be found on our phone or computer screens. How does this change our relationship with landscapes? Do landscapes feel closer to us when these images are at our fingertips? Do their transformations—sometimes radical—strike us more deeply when, for example, we view a whole series of photographs of the same landscape? And doesn’t the availability of online images also bring about a new way of framing the representation of landscapes?
We will attempt to answer these questions by presenting various digital tools, including the Landscape Photography Observatories, in conjunction with the publication of the book Representing Landscapes Yesterday and Today: Sensory and Digital Approaches (late 2019 from Presses Universitaires Savoie Mont Blanc, LLSETI, “Patrimoines” collection, edited by Dominique Pety, Hélène Schmutz, and Pascal Bouvier).
