“More Equality” Festival – “Women Who Laugh” Exhibition

May 7, 2019 12:00 a.m. - May 19, 2019, 12:00 a.m.

From March 5 to May 18, the "Plus d'égalité" (More Equality) Festival will take place on the campuses of the University of Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) and at partner venues. The goal of the various events at this festival is to take the time to ask questions, accept confrontation, imagine solutions, and above all, reflect and debate together on issues of equality. USMB offers conferences, round tables, and meetings with artists and specialists who will question our representations of the relationship between women and men.

From Wednesday, May 7, to Sunday, May 19, 2019, the Chambéry Museum of Fine Arts will hostMylène Besson’s exhibition “Les femmes qui rient” (Women Who Laugh).

A large drawing, 14 meters long, depicting 30 naked women laughing… and a book that tells the story behind this drawing: championing the cause of women. Through this book and this drawing, Mylène Besson tackles a subject of enduring relevance: the need to tirelessly produce new images of the female body to counter those that diminish it—and, along with it, women themselves. The dramatic nature of this creation struck Annie Ernaux, whose work reflects a focus on the process of becoming a woman—a journey that is never self-evident. She immediately recognized its singularity, both aesthetic and political, in an unpublished text titled *Les Médusantes*: “The mystery of this laughter is that it, precisely, destroys the ‘feminine mystery.’ It shatters the images that universally haunt the unconscious of both sexes…”.
